Re: Home-built lap counter

Thanks for the photos, Wes. It's a neat idea to have everything in a hole in the track like that. This counter seems to work well with only the single sensor per lane Just to make sure I understand this correctly: does this mean there is only one photo transistor for each lane? My experiments sugges...

Re: Tiny test track

Hi Phillip! This test track is okay and works as it should, but since it is so tiny the cars are nowhere near a realistic racing speed. For me that was okay because this particular track's purpose was to experiment with different ways of building the track rather than doing any actual racing on it. ...

Re: Home-built lap counter

Any updates.....? Does "my brain has melted in the summer heat" count as an update? ;-) From next week I start a four week vacation which should give me time/energy to finish the pc software for showing lap counts and times. Have any of you started experimenting with the sensors and ardui...

Re: Home-built lap counter

When I wrote tents of a second it was for communikation too the display. Laps should be counting in tousends of a second. Right, that makes a lot of sense :) But we need a strong system for laptime in the bottom. That is definitely also my main focus at the moment, and also the reason I've only wor...

Re: Home-built lap counter

Really good points, Wes, especially the one about the pit lane being faster. What I'll most likely do with the PC part of the software is to allow users to configure each sensor to work in different modes, e.g. start/finish line, sector X, pit and so on. Then it will simply be a matter of having dif...

Re: Home-built lap counter

Each IR should report Place, Id and TS (timestamp) My plan for these things are to configure the software running on the PC to handle placement of the IR sensors as well as timing. That way I can minimize the time spent transmitting data over the serial bus. Serial communication is horribly slow co...

That sounds great. I will put together a simple program to show lap counts and times and post it here :)

Re: Home-built lap counter

I think you are really helpfull to other magdrivers doing this. thanks. No worries! I've had a lot of help reading other people's posts about their experiences so giving something back just seems like the natural thing to do. Besides, it's just so much fun to work with these things :) what i mean w...

Re: Home-built lap counter

Hi Keld, Thanks for the feedback. You are absolutely right: cars going at high speed may be a challenge. Since I haven't built a sensor into anything resembling a real track that is something that may require a little tweaking. However, I did run some numbers on this with regards to car speed, how l...

Re: Home-built lap counter

Okay, it took a little more than a few days because I got sidetracked by work :) http://youtu.be/CdUZ5ZTUm5M It's probably not possible to actually see anything useful in the video except some numbers on a screen. However, those numbers do match the r/c channel chosen on the two cars you can see. Si...
